Medusa Sculpture

Medusa guarding The Temple of Apollo at Didyma. In Greek mythology, Medusa is one of the three gorgons. The gorgons were vicious female monsters with brass hands, sharp fangs and hair of living, venomous snakes. They turned to stone those who beheld them.

Though only three columns remain complete the temple is otherwise remarkably well preserved up to approximately a third of it's original height, so that a much fuller impression of the form of the internal layout can be gained here than at any other ancient temple in Turkey.

Lion Sculpture

This sculpture of a crouching lion stands near the entrance to the Temple of Apollo at Didyma, and appears to belong to an earlier, Hellenistic phase of the Temple than the many Roman architectural sculptures nearby. There are two remarkably similar sculptures from Xanthos now in the British Museum, London.
